Does any of this sound familiar?

Our thyroid is the engine of our bodies, producing the hormones that regulate the body’s energy use. This small, butterfly-shaped organ regulates heart, muscle, and digestive function as well as brain development, and bone maintenance.

Untreated, it can also lead to infertility and other reproduction-related problems (like preeclampsia, miscarriages, and irregularities with the menstrual cycle)

Can a nuritionist help with thyroid problems?

Our thyroid depends on the right nutrients to function well. Poor nutrition can interfere with thyroid health and even affect how your medications work. Many patients have “normal” bloodwork yet still feel exhausted, foggy, or unwell — and it’s not in your head.

Thyroid health and diet are closely connected. Certain eating habits can block thyroid hormone absorption, meaning your body may not be getting what it needs at a cellular level. Our Boston thyroid nutritionists help support Hashimoto’s, Graves’ disease, hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, and postpartum thyroid concerns with evidence-based nutrition guidance.

Optimize Performance and Improve Recovery with expert sports nutrition

There isn’t a specific diet that can “cure” hypothyroidism. However, nutrition plays an important role in how well your thyroid functions and how effectively your medication works. Certain foods and supplements can interfere with the absorption of thyroid hormone, which may leave you feeling fatigued or symptomatic even when your lab results look normal.

For the best medication effectiveness, take your thyroid medication on an empty stomach with water, then wait before eating. For several hours afterward, it’s best to avoid: walnuts, soybean flour, cottonseed meal, iron supplements or multivitamins containing iron, calcium supplements, antacids containing aluminum, magnesium, or calcium, sucralfate (ulcer medication), cholesterol-lowering medications containing cholestyramine or colestipol.

Beyond avoiding interference, a thoughtfully designed nutrition plan can support thyroid health by:

  • Ensuring adequate intake of iodine, selenium, and zinc, which are essential for thyroid hormone production and conversion.
  • Supporting energy, mood, and metabolism through balanced macronutrients and stable blood sugar.
  • Reducing inflammation that may worsen autoimmune thyroid conditions like Hashimoto’s.
  • Helping identify dietary patterns that may impact digestion, weight changes, or fatigue.

With guidance from a thyroid-focused dietitian, you can develop an individualized plan that supports hormone balance, improves how you feel day-to-day, and works alongside your prescribed treatment — not against it.
