What is an eating disorder?

Eating disorders are serious, often life-threatening mental health conditions that affect thoughts, emotions, and behaviors around food and body image. Common disorders include anorexia, bulimia, and binge-eating disorder, as well as bigorexia, diabulimia, orthorexia, and night eating. For many individuals and families, these illnesses bring fear, confusion, and overwhelming worry.

In the U.S., millions of people of all ages and genders struggle with eating disorders—and many never receive the support they need. Boys, men, girls, women, teens, and children are all affected, even though stigma and misunderstanding often hide the reality.

In Boston and beyond, these disorders touch families, schools, workplaces, teams, and communities. No one is alone in this experience, and compassionate, professional care can make a life-saving difference.

At BostonNutritionist.net, we have the training, experience, and compassion to support individuals struggling with disordered eating and eating disorders. We follow a Health at Every Size (HAES) approach, honoring body diversity and focusing on healing, nourishment, and overall health.

Recovery is a team process. Alongside therapists, physicians, and family support, working with a registered dietitian is a key part of treatment. Together, we’ll create an individualized nutrition plan, help you rebuild trust with food, and support a more positive, realistic relationship with your body.

We also guide families and caregivers, because eating disorders affect everyone involved. You don’t have to face this alone—healing is possible, and we’re here to help.

Rebuild Trust with Food and Body

What is an eating disorder dietitian?

An eating disorder dietitian is a licensed healthcare professional specially trained to work with individuals experiencing eating disorders and disordered eating—not just a general “nutritionist.”
Our Boston Nutritionist RDNs receive advanced clinical education, supervised training, and often additional certifications in eating disorder care. We understand the complex medical, psychological, and nutritional aspects of these illnesses and how they affect the body and brain.

MNT with someone on our team includes:

  • Assessing nutritional status and medical risks related to restriction, binging, purging, or over-exercising.
  • Supporting medical stabilization and restoring safe, adequate nutrition.
  • Helping patients repair their relationship with food through gentle, compassionate, trauma-informed guidance.
  • Addressing fear foods, rigid rules, and body image distress.
  • Collaborating closely with therapists, physicians, psychiatrists, and families as part of a treatment team.

Our goal is not just “what to eat,” but helping patients feel safe with food again, rebuild trust in their bodies, and support long-term recovery and healing.

Over 90% of our patients pay nothing out of pocket. We’re in-network with most major insurance plans. We will check your coverage for you.

FAQ About Outpatient Treatment for Eating Disorders:

What is the difference between an eating disorder and disordered eating?

The difference between disordered eating and an eating disorder depends on how closely symptoms match the American Psychiatric Association’s diagnostic criteria. Disordered eating is not a formal diagnosis, but it still matters. Many people experience harmful eating thoughts or behaviors that don’t meet full diagnostic criteria—yet they can still affect health, wellbeing, and quality of life.

At Boston Nutritionist, we encourage early support. You don’t need a diagnosis to deserve care. Getting help now can prevent symptoms from worsening and can support a healthier, more peaceful relationship with food and your body.

At Boston Nutritionist, we provide outpatient, online nutrition care. We:

  • Work closely with the full healthcare team to provide coordinated, patient-centered care

  • Identify food rituals, eating patterns, and behaviors that may be harmful or distressing

  • Teach how the body uses food as fuel to support strength, energy, brain function, and daily living

  • Help patients understand that food isn’t “good” or “bad,” and reduce fear, guilt, and shame around eating

  • Create structured, sustainable meal plans that support nourishment, balance, and stability

  • Regularly review nutrition intake, vitals, growth or weight changes (when appropriate), and emotional responses to eating

  • Support patients in improving their relationship with food and with their bodies, fostering trust, respect, and self-compassion
