Common Digestive Health Disorders Explained:

Irritable Bowel Syndrome:

This is a chronic digestive disorder affecting the large intestine. It’s a functional disorder. This means the gut looks normal but doesn’t function as it should. It is characterized by abnormal muscle contractions that cause abdominal pain, bloating, cramping, gas, diarrhe, constipation, and more. Though there is no cure, there are lifestyle and dietary interventions to help manage this disorder.

SIBO:

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) occurs when too many bacteria grow in the small intestine—an area that normally has relatively low bacterial levels. It often develops when digestion slows, sometimes due to illness, surgery, or other medical conditions. When food and waste move too slowly, it creates an environment where bacteria can multiply and cause uncomfortable digestive symptoms.

Leaky Gut:

Our bodies are remarkable. We have an intestinal lining that covers over 4000 square feet of surface area. And every human experiences some level of leaky gut, as this lining is permeable. That said, when our lining has cracks or holes, partially digested food particles, toxins, and bugs penetrate the lining and leak into our digestive tract. This can cause inflammation and changes in our intestinal microbiome.

Can a Dietitian Help with Gut Health?

Improving gut health takes both lifestyle and diet changes. At Boston Nutritionist, we use a functional nutrition approach, and the first thing we want to understand is WHY you’re not feeling well. With expert guidance and the right diagnostic testing, we can identify digestive disorders and food sensitivities, then build a sustainable nutrition plan that works for you.

About 100 trillion bacteria live in our gut.

These trillions of microbes create their own powerful ecosystem—the microbiome—which has a massive impact on overall health. As Kelly Bilodeau, executive editor of Harvard Women’s Health Watch, explains, researchers are linking these tiny organisms to everything from obesity to neurodegenerative disease.

What we do know is clear: gut health is directly tied to mental health, weight regulation, immune function, hormone balance, and the prevention of chronic disease. Your gut matters—and so does how you feel every day.

What is a Low FODMAP Diet?

One strategy to help reduce symptoms of IBS, SIBO, and other digestive conditions is a low FODMAP diet—but it’s not right for everyone or every diagnosis. (This is not a one-diet-fits-all-gut-problems plan!)

At Boston Nutritionist, we use the low FODMAP diet as a structured, evidence-based tool to identify food triggers, especially for IBS and gut-related disorders. It’s meant to be temporary, personalized, and guided by a dietitian. Please don’t try this alone—our team will walk you through each phase step by step so it feels manageable and sustainable.

FODMAPs are short-chain carbohydrates (Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides, and Polyols) found in many everyday foods. For some people, they can cause bloating, gas, cramping, and diarrhea.

A low FODMAP plan reduces high-FODMAP foods for 6–8 weeks, then gradually reintroduces them to identify specific triggers. An RDN from our team will support you through the entire process—ensuring proper nutrition, guiding reintroduction, and adjusting as needed.

We also look beyond food. Our approach considers stress, lifestyle, eating patterns, and overall gut health to help restore comfort, balance, and confidence in how you feel.

Over 90% of our patients pay nothing out of pocket. We’re in-network with most major insurance plans. We will check your coverage for you.
