What is PCOS?
PCOS is a metabolic and hormonal disorder that affects about 5% to 10% of women of childbearing age. Though doctors don’t know why, we do know it’s connected to hormone levels—particularly androgens—linked to metabolism (and is more common in women with obesity), and strongly influenced by genetics. Women whose mothers have had PCOS are more likely to develop it.
Living with PCOS can feel overwhelming, like your body has a mind of its own. At Boston Nutritionist, our women’s health dietitians truly listen to your story—your symptoms, your frustrations, your fears—and help you make sense of what’s happening in your body. Acne, fatigue, weight gain, painful and irregular periods, anxiety, and low fertility are all common symptoms of PCOS.
Other symptoms include:
- Darkening of skin on your neck, groin, or under your breasts
- Excess hair on your face, chin, chest, fingers, toes, or other places where men typically have hair
- Difficulty losing weight
- Flaps of skin, known as skin tags, on your neck or in your armpit area
- Headaches
- High blood glucose or insulin levels.
- Missed periods (fewer than eight total per year), prolonged periods, and/or heavy menstrual bleeding
- Moodiness
- Pelvic pain
- Thinning hair or baldness
- Trouble getting pregnant
- Trouble sleeping
Because PCOS can show up in so many different ways, it is often under- and undiagnosed —and many women quietly struggle for years before receiving the support they deserve. You don’t have to navigate this alone. Our compassionate, expert dietitians partner with you, validate what you’re experiencing, and help you feel better.
