What Exactly Does a Nutritionist Do?

Many people come into their first nutrition appointment worried they’re about to meet the “food police.” They expect judgment, strict rules, or a bland meal plan they’ll never actually follow.

Let’s clear that up right away.

At Boston Nutritionist, our approach is rooted in evidence-based, compassionate medical nutrition therapy. We believe food should be nourishing and enjoyable. You don’t have to give up your favorite foods or cultural traditions to improve your health. With thoughtful adjustments and realistic support, real change is possible.

Whether you’re located in Boston, Cambridge, Somerville, or working with us through online nutrition therapy, our goal is to help you feel better — not restricted.

What’s the Difference Between a Dietitian and a Nutritionist?

The terms are often used interchangeably, but they’re not the same.

A Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) is a licensed healthcare provider who:

  • Holds a degree in nutrition from an accredited program
  • Completes supervised clinical training
  • Passes a national licensing exam
  • Is qualified to provide medical nutrition therapy (MNT)

A nutritionist, on the other hand, may have varying levels of education. In many states, the title isn’t legally protected, and nutritionists cannot diagnose or treat medical conditions.

Dietitians can provide medical nutrition therapy for conditions such as:

  • Diabetes and pre-diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Eating disorders and disordered eating
  • PCOS
  • GI conditions
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Fatty liver disease
  • ARFID and picky eating
    …and more

What Does a Nutritionist Do Day-to-Day?

At its core, nutrition counseling is about understanding how food affects your body — specifically your body. No two people have the same needs, and we take the time to figure out why something isn’t working.

At Boston Nutritionist, we help you:

  • Assess your nutrition needs and health history
  • Create personalized, realistic nutrition plans
  • Provide medical nutrition therapy for chronic and complex conditions
  • Improve energy, digestion, hormone balance, and metabolic health
  • Navigate food relationships, body image, and long-term behavior change

We also collaborate with physicians and healthcare teams when needed — especially for eating disorders, chronic illness, and medically complex cases.

Most importantly, we listen. Your symptoms are real. Your struggles are valid. And with the right support, change is absolutely possible.

We work with clients throughout the Boston area and across Massachusetts, as well as via secure telehealth appointments.
